ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GREATER EAST
At EDGE, our goal is to facilitate land reclamation and economic renewal in Central Appalachia. We help create self-sustaining systems that provide good jobs, affordable and nutritious food, and empowered community landscapes. We prioritize on-site research, economic development, and community collaboration to build out long-lasting solutions for the Appalachian region.
T & T Organics and EDGE’s DRT Environment facility is a living laboratory dedicated to researching economic drivers for our area. From our apiary, to our high tunnels, to our hydropanel installation, our tools at the DRT Environment allow us to test business ideas and host on-site workforce education.
Community-Led Development
With the proper infrastructure and remediation, Central Appalachia is predicted to be more protected than other regions by significant climate events. EDGE is addressing current barriers and epidemics in our communities, as well as preparing the region for a potential influx of climate refugees.
To help heal and protect the land for future use, EDGE is researching scalable flood mitigation, regenerative agriculture, conservation, and green energy. In order to play our part in creating a welcoming Appalachia, our workforce programming is centered around creating opportunities for previously excluded communities. Through these focuses, we hope to make this land a safe haven for all who do–and will– call Appalachia home.
We’re proudly based in the Southern Coalfields, and partner with grassroots community groups to help steer and educate on great work occurring in McDowell County. Read this report from our friends at From Below to hear about our upcoming projects!
