DRT Environment

Welcome to the DRT Environment: A Hub for Agricultural Innovation and Workforce Development

The DRT Environment is more than just a farm—it’s a demonstration, research, and training facility designed to empower the next generation of food producers and entrepreneurs in central Appalachia. Operated by Economic Development Greater East (EDGE) and T & T Organics, the DRT Environment is home to the AgForce Development Program, a comprehensive workforce development initiative. Made possible by a partnership with Berwind Land Company on 350 acres, the DRT Environment is an example of potential partnerships available for economic transition in Appalachia.

A LIVING CLASSROOM

Current Opportunities at the DRT Environment

As a living classroom where cutting-edge agricultural techniques are demonstrated and tested, the DRT Environment holds many key tools for regional growth. The facility includes:

  • High Tunnels, Greenhouse and Nursery: Extending the growing season and providing protected environments for a variety of crops, these structures are essential for year-round production. The greenhouse and nursery will allow food-bearing plants and forest medicinal plants to be started and sold, including fruit tree stock, berries and vegetable plants.
  • Fruit Orchards: A diverse range of fruit trees offers hands-on learning in orchard management and fruit production, creating producers and contributing to local and regional food systems.
  • Poultry and Goat Production: Demonstrations in livestock management provide training in raising poultry and goats, both of which offer significant opportunities for local farmers.
  • Apiary and Honey Production: Beekeeping demonstrations highlight the importance of pollinators in agriculture, while also offering valuable lessons in honey production and small-scale agribusiness.
  • SOURCE Hydropanel Project: Sixty hydro panels produce water using sunlight and compressed air, creating a social enterprise for clean water sales and/or donation for surrounding communities.

Rebuilding the Community Through Agriculture

The DRT Environment plays a critical role in rebuilding the community by creating pathways to economic independence and sustainability. By fostering food producers and entrepreneurs, the facility helps to:

  • Strengthen Local Economies: Supporting the growth of small businesses that contribute to the region’s food systems, from farm to market.
  • Create Jobs and Opportunities: Training a new generation of farmers and entrepreneurs who can generate income and employment within their communities.
  • Promote Sustainable Practices: Teaching conservation-minded agricultural methods that protect the environment while boosting productivity and profitability.
